Porthmadog, known locally as “Port”, is a small harbour town on the Glaslyn Estuary in the Eifionydd area of Gwynedd, Wales. It developed as a port exporting slate in the 19th century, and was named after W.A. Maddocks who had designed an ambitious “Cob” embankment scheme. Since the decline of the slate industry it has become a significant shopping centre for the region and as well as a popular holiday destination. The sandy beach at Blackrock Sands on the outskirts of Porthmadog stretches for miles, and cars are able to drive onto the beach and park there.
The town’s setting is particularly impressive, as it is dominated on one side by a mountain called “Moel y Gest”, 262 metres above the town. To the north and east the sweeping expanse of the estuary, renowned as a haven for wildlife and migrating birds, extends dramatically towards the Snowdon range. The town is often referred to as the Gateway to Snowdon, and the Ffestiniog Railway terminates here.
Porthmadog has a number of craft shops and restaurants. It is served by three railway stations as well as various buses and coaches. The ashes of the poet R.S. Thomas are buried in the churchyard at St John’s Church on Ffordd Penamser, and Percy Bysshe Shelley is reputed to have visited the area regularly.
Other places nearby include Morfa Bychan, Prenteg, Penrhyndeudraeth, Talsarnau, and Harlech.
